Frequently Asked General Questions

Check out the FAQs below to find answers to your questions. If your question is not addressed here, send us an email or call us toll free at 1-800-905-6515.

1. What is Health-Medical Tourism?

Health Medical Tourism is a term to describe the rapidly-growing practice of traveling from one country to another to obtain health care and to enhance one’s well-being. People are traveling for medical care because of affordability, quicker access to care or a higher level of quality of care.

2. Why do people travel abroad to obtain health care?

Many people travel abroad for care they can’t afford at home, but some travel to get a more experienced surgeon or to avoid long waiting lists in their home country. Many use a medical tourism facilitator to make all the arrangements and eliminate complexities.

There are many reasons for seeking medical care abroad, however the most common are:

  • Price – The price is one of the main reasons most people initially cite for their decision to go overseas for medical treatment. Beyond having a lower price, however, foreign hospitals are far more willing to provide upfront prices and quotes than US hospitals.
  • Quality of Service – Beyond simple costs, people appreciate the superior service found in foreign hospitals. Medical tourists receive personalized care from medical and nursing staff overseas.
  • Accessibility / Availability – Medical tourists have greater access to cutting edge treatments and experienced surgeons in procedures that might be unavailable in their home country. In the US, Canada or the UK, waiting lists can extend to more than a year for essential surgery and past three for non-essential surgery. With a well-planned medical trip, most surgeries can be conducted within days of landing and consultation in any hospitals abroad.
  • Tourism – Medical tourism is often as much about the tourism as the medicine. For those undergoing major surgery, there is no better place to recover than a bungalow with a view of the beach while receiving your physical therapy. Similarly, for family accompanying a patient a week at the beach or a shopping spree can clear up a lot of stress following a surgery.

3. What about the quality of care in hospitals abroad?

Many top hospitals around the world are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), a US based hospital accreditation organization. Please check if the hospital in your country of destination is accredited by JCI and/or by other accreditation organizations: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).

4. What is accreditation and what are the benefits?

Accreditation is a process in which an entity, separate and distinct from the healthcare organization, usually non-governmental, accesses the healthcare organization to determine if it meets a set of standard requirements designed to improve quality of care. Accreditation is usually voluntary. Accreditation standards are usually regarded as optimal and achievable. Accreditation provides a visible commitment by an organization to improve the quality of patient care, to ensure a safe environment and to continually work to reduce risks to patients and staff. Accreditation has gained worldwide attention as an effective quality evaluation and management tool.

5. What is Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation?

In response to growing interest in accreditation and quality improvements worldwide, the Joint Commission launched its international accreditation program in 1999. JCI accreditation standards are based on international consensus standards and set uniform, achievable expectations for structures, processes and outcomes for hospitals. The accreditation process is designed to accommodate specific legal, religious and cultural factors within a country. JCI accreditation can help international healthcare organizations, public health agencies, health ministries and others to evaluate, improve and demonstrate the quality of patient care in their nations.

6. What is International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Accreditation?

ISO is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards. It is a network of the national standards institutes of 162 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system. ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations. Therefore, ISO enables a consensus to be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society. Under International Workshop Agreement 1:2005 it provides additional guidance for any health service organization involved in the management, delivery, or administration of health service products or services, including training and/or research, in the life continuum process for human beings, regardless of type, size and the product or service provided.

7. What is International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) Accreditation?

ISQua is a non-profit, independent organization with members in over 70 countries. ISQua works to provide services to guide health professionals, providers, researchers, agencies, policy makers and consumers, to achieve excellence in healthcare delivery to all people, and to continuously improve the quality and safety of care. ISQua offers a unique opportunity for individuals and institutions with a common interest to share expertise via an international multidisciplinary forum. ISQua is formally recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being in “Official Relations” with the WHO. ISQua is assisting with technical and policy advice based on evidence and best practices and contributing to knowledge sharing as part of WHO initiatives.

They serve as the case manager / liaison between you and the international hospital and doctor. They also function as a travel coordinator, requesting and obtaining passports, booking flights, and arranging your lodging, transportation and tours.
